Market Baskets
My favorite kind of reed baskets are the market baskets. They are so functional --- I carry my stuff from home to the studio in a market basket.
The blue one has cloth handles and what looks like shadows are dyed dark blue that fades into the lighter blue in the center. It is 14" wide and 20" long. The other basket is built on a wooden Williamsburg handle. It has seagrass and rust colored reed for decoration. It is 12" wide and 16" long. Both are finished with polyurethane, are very sturdy and will give years of service.

Three very useful baskets!!
The first two are made with flat reed. One has a leather handle for hanging and is 10" by 7" by 5.5" high. The second is 8" by 6" by 4" high. They are perfect for storing remotes, collecting junk on the kitchen counter (I have several of these) and keeping track of mail going in or out. $25.00 plus shipping
The third is made from round reed with deep red beads. It is 10.5" by 6.5" and 1.5" high on the sides and 3.5" on the ends. The shape reminds me of a boat. Bread basket? Napkin basket? Fruit basket? Oh I know - perfect for bananas.

And another urn shaped basket. Can you tell I like this shape? This is made with round reed. The spiral design is made by the weave - three rod wale. Using three pieces of round it over the whole basket makes it a very strong basket. It is one of the most common weaves used for wicker baskets.

Round reed is a fun material to work with. You can make it into almost any shape. This is a traditional round "basket" with an unusual rim.

On this and the following basket I experimented with a new dyeing technique called ice dying. The reed is completely covered in ice and then several colors of dye are sprinkled on top. As the ice melts it gives the reed a blotchy mix of the colors. When woven up you get a wonderful mélange of colors.
